Big Results from Little Eyelid Procedures

Bags and puffiness around your eyes can add years to your face, make you look perpetually sad or tired, and even obstruct your vision. You can’t blink these problems away, but an eyelid surgery in Manhattan called a blepharoplasty can reduce those puffy eyelids and eliminate the excess baggage under your eyes.

A blepharoplasty eliminates the excess skin, fat, and lax muscle from your upper and/or lower eyelids. The goal is to give you refreshed eyes and a younger-looking appearance overall. Here are common issues that can be addressed:

  • If your upper eyelids are droopy, eyelid surgery can remove sagging skin.
  • If your upper eyelids are puffy, the fat deposits that cause puffiness can be removed.
  • If your lower lids are loose, your surgeon can tighten them.
  • If you have bags under your eyes, blepharoplasty can remove them.

Only a few small incisions are required—either in the creases of your eyelids or in your lower eyelid. After the procedure, you’ll have some minor bruising and your skin may feel a little tight for a short time. During those first few days, you’ll rest at home and oral medication will ensure your comfort. You’ll need to keep your head elevated when you sleep during that time. Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and eye drops will help your eyes stay moist as you heal. You will be able to get a sense of your final results in about two weeks. If you had incisions in the creases of your upper eyelids, they will continue to fade for about one year—by that time they will be barely visible.

Ideal candidates are healthy non-smokers. The majority of eyelid lift patients are over the age of 35, but younger people who would like to remove fat deposits or change the shape of their upper eyelids can also benefit from the procedure. If you have any serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, you should talk to your ophthalmologist to make sure the procedure won’t interfere with any ongoing treatments.

While the physical changes that are part of eyelid surgery—such as removing excess fat and skin—will last a lifetime, the natural aging process will inevitably continue. A skilled and experienced plastic surgeon can help you manage future aging gracefully with appropriate skin care, non-surgical treatments, and surgical procedures, if needed. Dr. Zevon prefers a light-handed approach to age management, so you’ll look natural and have continued confidence in your appearance.

A blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with a browlift or a facelift, depending on your cosmetic objectives.
